Understanding Part Conditions: What You’re Really Buying
We recognize that terminology in the aviation parts world can often be confusing—especially when it comes to “outright sales,” “exchanges,” and condition codes. So, let’s break down these terms to help you make more informed decisions:

An Overhauled part has been fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired, reassembled, and tested in strict accordance with FAA-approved maintenance data. Life-limited, worn, and damaged parts are replaced, and the unit is often refinished to look like new.

These components are issued an FAA Form 8130-3 and are considered airworthy and ready for service.

Repaired parts undergo a similar process to overhauls but on a more limited scale. Only the components necessary to restore functionality are replaced. Once tested and approved, the unit is returned to service with an FAA Form 8130-3 indicating it has been repaired.

In an outright sale, you are purchasing a part without any requirement to return a core. These are ideal when you don’t have a returnable unit or simply want to avoid the logistics of an exchange.

An exchange sale allows you to receive an overhauled component immediately in return for your used core. Once your core is returned, it goes through the overhaul process to replenish our stock for the next customer.

In most cases, the exchanged component must match the part number of the original. Alternate part numbers may be accepted with prior approval, though this is rare.

A core is a used unit that hasn’t yet been repaired or overhauled—typically equivalent to an “as removed” component. Cores are returned to the repair station during an exchange transaction so they can be refurbished and reissued.

A component labeled As Removed means it has been taken directly from an aircraft and is sold as-is, with no repairs or testing performed. These parts may have been removed due to system upgrades, aircraft teardowns, or operational issues—and they carry no guarantee of functionality.

Tip: Always buy As Removed parts from reputable sources that offer return options if the item proves unserviceable. Otherwise, you may end up with an expensive paperweight.

A Serviceable part has been tested and confirmed to be in working order or repairable with minimal effort. It hasn’t been overhauled but is generally installable as-is or may require only a minor repair.

This option is typically more affordable than new or overhauled parts and is ideal when speed and cost savings are priorities—without compromising reliability.

New Surplus components are brand new, never used, and often come from unused inventory, but without traceability back to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). These may come with a Certificate of Conformance but usually lack FAA paperwork.

These parts can be a great value but should be used with discretion depending on your regulatory or documentation requirements.

The New Stock classification means the component is brand new, has never been installed, and includes full OEM documentation—such as FAA Form 8130-3 or other traceability paperwork. These are the highest-tier parts in terms of documentation, compliance, and airworthiness assurance.

At S & T Aircraft, we’re not just here to sell you parts— we’re here to guide you through the process, help you choose the right solution, and ensure your aircraft stays mission-ready. Whether it’s outright, exchange, or repair, our goal is to provide reliable components with honesty, transparency, and world-class service.
